How hard is it for you to be humble? When a person is ignorant on a subject . . . humility is the natural outcome. However, adding knowledge of a subject and humility becomes impossible! I believe it was H. M.S. Richards who once stated, "I don't have a problem being humble with a mechanic . . . I'm not a mechanic. I know nothing about cars. I don't have a problem being humble with a doctor, I know very little in comparison to an educated, practicing doctor. I even don't have a problem being humble with a chef, I'm certainly not one.
"But a preacher. Someone that is better at preaching than me, can speak more articulately, more passionately, more convincingly . . . that's where it's hard to be humble. If they correct me, or suggest things to me, or anything to do with my profession, that's when I have to pray hard to have a humble spirit to hear what they say!" Now, this quote is my recollection of the statement by Pastor Richards, However, the message is clear . . . being humble on a subject that one is ignorant on is easy. Being humble on a subject you know . . . well, that's hard.
One of the pleasing personality traits of a Christian is their humility. When one remembers the words of Solomon, "Pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall." - Prov. 16:18, NKJV . . . one leads a life that leaves an impression on many people. Why does humility do that? Because humility needs other people. It makes other people feel like you care about them. It makes you like Jesus.
God has given unto us something that will help us in our spiritual journey. That something is Communion. Not only is it a reminder of what was done on our behalf . . . it serves as a means to create an atmosphere where humility goes from being a possibility to a probability to a reality! And that reality of humility changes human lives forever!
So, until the next time, this is Pastor Tello reminding you that thoughts do change lives!
